I just noticed a very small leak on the front axle of my 755, so I checked oil level,When I removed the cap it hissed at me. I don't remember seeing a vent!must be plugged? does any one know where it's at!

Dana,I'm not sure that there is one. Last time I changed the oil in the front axle of my 855 (now sold), the oil sprayed out of the axle like it was under pressure - made a huge mess. I had been using the tractor before I changed the oil, so it was warm. FWIWSteve ....

I have a 4200 and the front axle does the same thing when I remove the plug to check the level after having ran it. I also have wondered if there is a vent somewhere. I know that leaking seals can be caused by a plugged vent but my tractor is only a few months old and it has done it from the start. I thought the vent my have a check valve in it that requires a certain pressure buildup before it releases to keep foreign material from entering. I have seen instances where water/sludge has entered the axle of a tractor through the vent and ruined the bearings so maybe its not a bad thing to have some pressure.Randy ....

I think you will find this is normal, at least it has been on all my machines (15 so far). When I asked the 'Techies' at Kubota, they said the front axles are not vented, to help keep crap out, however, when you work the machine it heats up the front axle causing pressure, when you shut down the machine some pressure remains. Apparently for quite some time........ ....

I've noticed the pressure too. Maybe it works in for some types of agriculture that we aren't familiar with around here. Or maybe it was just a designer's oversight which they have decided to try to sell as a "feature". A real problem with a vented axle happens when it is hot from working and the tractor is driven through a stream....or possibly a rice field? Then the air in the axle cools and sucks air in through the vent. If the vent is under water or cracked....It sucks up water instead. An unvented axle will not do this. At least it won't until the outer axle seals wear out. Then it is just like a vented axle with a cracked vent hose - and it will suck water in every time it gets a chance. This is something that the 4wd automotive guys deal with all the time since they do a lot of stream crossings. Current wisdom is to vent it, run the vent hose up high and into a vent cannister, and check that system often. Roger ....
